Boiler fault codes

What’s your boiler’s fault code telling you?

A code on the display means the boiler has spotted a problem and shut itself down to stay safe. Some you can clear yourself in a couple of minutes, others need a Gas Safe engineer. Find your boiler below, or call us and read us the code.

Before you call

Four things you can safely check first

Check the pressure

Look at the gauge on the front of the boiler. With the heating off it should sit between 1 and 1.5 bar. Below 1 bar is the most common reason for a fault code, and your manual shows how to top it up.

Check your gas

Does the hob light? If not, the problem is the gas supply, not the boiler. On a prepayment meter, check you’ve still got credit.

Check the condensate pipe

In freezing weather the plastic pipe running outside can ice up and lock the boiler out. Pour warm (not boiling) water along it, then reset.

Reset it once

Reset the boiler the way your manual shows. If the same code comes back, stop resetting and call an engineer, because repeated resets can hide a real fault.

Most common codes

The codes we get called out for most

If yours is here, this is the short version. The brand pages go into more detail.

Vaillant F22 · Ideal F1 · Baxi E118 · Worcester CE 207 · Low water pressure

What it means: There isn’t enough water in the heating system, so the boiler has shut down to protect itself.

What you can safely check: If the gauge reads under 1 bar, top it up to between 1 and 1.5 bar using the filling loop, as your manual shows.

When to call us: It keeps dropping. That usually means a leak, a faulty pressure relief valve or an expansion vessel that needs recharging.

Vaillant F28 · Worcester EA 227 · Baxi E133 · Ideal L2 · Boiler won’t light

What it means: The boiler tried to light and couldn’t detect a flame, so it locked out.

What you can safely check: Make sure your other gas appliances work and your prepay meter has credit. In freezing weather, check the condensate pipe outside isn’t frozen. Then reset once.

When to call us: The code comes back after one reset. Common causes are the ignition electrode, the gas valve or the circuit board.

Vaillant F29 · Worcester EA 229 · Ideal F2 · Flame lost while running

What it means: The boiler lit, but the flame went out while it was running and it couldn’t relight.

What you can safely check: The same checks as above: gas supply, prepay credit and the condensate pipe. Then reset once.

When to call us: It keeps happening. It can point to low gas pressure, a flue problem or a worn electrode.

Vaillant F20 · Worcester E9 224 · Baxi E110 · Ideal L1 · Overheating

What it means: The boiler got too hot, or water isn’t moving through it properly, and a safety cut-out has tripped.

What you can safely check: Check the pressure and that your radiator valves are open, then reset once.

When to call us: It trips again. Poor circulation from a failing pump or sludge in the system is the usual cause.

Safety first

Smell gas? Leave the boiler alone

If you can smell gas, or your carbon monoxide alarm goes off, don’t try to reset the boiler. Turn the gas off at the meter if you can, open the windows, don’t use light switches or anything that could spark, and get everyone outside.

Never take the boiler casing off yourself. Anything inside the boiler is, by law, a job for a Gas Safe registered engineer.

Questions

Fault code questions

Can I fix a boiler fault code myself?

Some, yes. Low pressure, a frozen condensate pipe or a prepay meter that’s run out are all things you can sort safely. Anything that needs the casing off, or a code that comes back after one reset, needs a Gas Safe engineer.

How much does it cost to fix a boiler fault?

It depends on the fault and the part. We diagnose the problem first and agree the price with you before any work starts, so there are no surprises.

My boiler is showing a code that isn’t listed here. What now?

Call us on 07970 828 755 and read us the code and your boiler’s make and model. We work on every major make of gas boiler.

Is it worth repairing an older boiler?

Usually, yes, if the boiler is in decent shape and the part is still available. If a repair isn’t worth it, we’ll tell you straight and give you a free, fixed-price quote for a new boiler.

Do you come out at night and at weekends?

Yes. Our emergency line is open 24/7 for breakdowns. Routine servicing runs Monday to Friday.
